Talking Tales with Shaun Tan: School Workshop

Tales from Outer Suburbia

Flying Bark is thrilled to be part of an exciting new schools workshop, Talking Tales with Shaun Tan, presented by ACMI and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF), inspired by our premium animated series Tales from Outer Suburbia, produced with Highly Spirited Productions.

This special Q&A event offers students a rare chance to hear directly from one of Australia’s most celebrated storytellers, Shaun Tan, as he shares the journey of transforming his much-loved illustrated book into a bold new animated series. Shaun will take audiences inside his creative process as an illustrator and writer, and talk about collaborating with some of the country’s most talented animators to bring these extraordinary stories to life on screen.

Designed for Year 5 and 6 students, the session is a fantastic introduction to storytelling, adaptation and visual design, with plenty of inspiration to spark creativity back in the classroom.

The event will also include interactive activities and a behind-the-scenes segment with Tales from Outer Suburbia Series Director Noel Cleary, offering students a closer look at how animated series are made.

Teachers are encouraged to have their classes submit questions for Shaun here by Friday, 8 May at 5pm.

We can’t wait to see young storytellers diving into the world of Tales from Outer Suburbia and discovering how stories travel from page to screen.
